IP68: Is the iPhone XS Max waterproof?

The smartphone is nowadays, the central point in our life. We can hardly do without it anymore. The bad thing is that not every smartphone is intended for water. Also, accidents are in a small corner. A fallen glass of water can cause a lot of damage. Apple has announced that it will provide the iPhone XS Max with an IP68 certification. Does that finally mean that we can go deep sea diving with our telephone? You can read it here!

The iPhone XS Max is officially certified according to the IP68 standard. This means two things:

The first number, in this case, the 6, indicates the dust density of the device. The 6 is the highest value, which means that the device is completely dustproof. The housing is designed so that no dust can penetrate.

The second number in the IP67 standard indicates how well the device is protected against moisture. The highest value is 9. The 8 in the certification shows that the device is protected against permanent immersion. This means that the iPhone XS Max must be able to survive for 30 minutes up to 2 meters underwater.

So you can take the iPhone XS Max with you in the shower, but we do not recommend swimming or diving with the iPhone.

Your telephone is indispensable during winter sports. You make the best photos with it, make sure you don't get lost, and of course, it is handy if you can reach someone in need. However, you will lose your phone during a hike or ski descent, so that it will be buried in the snow for half a day or more. It can happen to all of us. But will the iPhone XS Max survive in the snow?

You would say that the iPhone XS Max can withstand a bit of snow. In principle, it is, of course, just water. However, snow contains a high content of mineral and other substances that can be harmful to your phone. This can lead to corrosion in the iPhone, making it unusable. Also, it is essential to keep your iPhone well warm during the cold winter days. The XS Max is not resistant to shallow temperatures.

The overview below shows the consequences of low temperatures.

At -10 degrees, your smartphone will empty faster.
At -20 degrees, your smartphone will fall out.
At -30 degrees, your smartphone will experience battery and LCD problems.
At -40 degrees or lower, your smartphone will no longer work.

However, these effects are temporary until your iPhone XS Max is warmed up again. Note that due to shallow temperatures, your iPhone will function worse. Our advice: Use a Waterproof Case even in the snow.

It is best for your smartphone to turn it off completely, but for most people, that is not easy. Another option is to give your smartphone time to warm up. So wait a while to switch on your phone as soon as you are inside.
If your battery runs out faster due to the cold, it is useful to have an external array, such as a power bank. This allows you to shoot beautiful holiday photos even at the end of the day.
It is of course also smart to store your iPhone warm. In the pocket close to your body or stored in a waterproof bag. This makes your smartphone immediately protected against incoming snowballs.
